Berlin (dpa) - With the German Future Prize of the Federal President, a production technology for high-performance microchips is recognized this year.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier presented the award for technology and innovation endowed with 250,000 euros on Wednesday in Berlin to a team from Baden-Württemberg and Thuringia.

The developers around spokesman Peter Kurz come from the companies Zeiss (Oberkochen) and Trumpf (Ditzingen) as well as the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Mechanics IOF (Jena).

The award winners made a significant contribution to the development of so-called EUV lithography, with which microelectronic components with extremely fine structures can be manufactured, it said.

According to Kurz, the microchips can be found in the latest smartphones.

Two other teams were nominated for work on the thermal insulation of buildings and a combination of optics and robotics in the operating room.

Steinmeier explained that the projects demonstrated “what outstanding innovative strength lies in Germany”.

The Federal President's Future Prize has been awarded since 1997.

Outstanding innovations from the fields of technology, engineering and natural sciences as well as IT are awarded.

Last year, developers of software to improve processes in companies were honored.
