Berlin (dpa) - Berlin's governing mayor Michael Müller has appealed to people's sense of responsibility and personal responsibility in view of the planned easing of the corona contact restrictions over Christmas and New Year's Eve.

Politicians want “of course, given this special season of the year, to make some things possible that might not be necessary if you look coolly at the numbers,” said the SPD politician on Wednesday after a video conference between the heads of state and Chancellor Angela Merkel ( CDU).

"But making things possible doesn't mean that everything has to be used that is possible."

He directs an urgent appeal to people to be aware of what each individual can do to protect themselves and others, said Müller.

"And family celebrations, (...) even if they are possible, you may not have to organize as large and in the same form as you have done in recent years."

The end of the pandemic has not yet come.

"We are in a situation where it really is a matter of life and death in many areas."
