Luxembourg (dpa) - The Luxembourg parliament has given the green light for tightened measures in the fight against the corona pandemic.

The MPs voted with a narrow majority on Wednesday for a government law that provides for a partial lockdown.

From this Thursday restaurants, pubs and numerous cultural and leisure facilities will have to close by December 15th.

In addition, the contact restrictions will be tightened further.

So only a maximum of two people who have to come from the same second household can be invited.

So far the number has been four people.

With the package, Luxembourg reigns on continued high numbers of corona infections.

"We hope to be able to prevent a complete lockdown," said the chairman of the health committee, Mars di Bartolomeo, in parliament.

Since the end of October, there has been a night curfew from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. in Luxembourg and an increased mask requirement.

The "explosion" in the number of infections had recently been slowed down - but this was not enough, said Di Bartolomeo.

According to the law, cinemas, theaters and fitness studios must close, museums and libraries remain open.

School operations are to continue, for upper classes there will be alternating lessons between face-to-face and "homeschooling".

The new corona wave hit the second smallest country in the EU with a good 600,000 inhabitants.

According to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), Luxembourg is currently at the top in Europe for the 14-day incidence, i.e. the number of new infections within 14 days per 100,000 inhabitants, with 1,284 (as of 25 November).

Luxembourg also blames a high number of tests for the high numbers.

288 people have died in Luxembourg in connection with an infection (as of November 25).

225 people are in clinics, 43 of them in intensive care units.
