Berlin / Dresden (dpa / sn) - Two large research centers are to be built in the Saxon coal regions in the next few years.

Up to 170 million euros should flow into each center per year, announced the Federal Ministry of Research and the Saxon government on Tuesday after an external cabinet meeting in Berlin.

Most of the money comes from the Structural Strengthening Act, but also from the state.

The federal and state governments started the ideas competition "Knowledge creates perspectives for the region" to determine the precise content.

First, ideas are to be evaluated and concepts worked out, the foundation is planned for 2023.

Scientists are invited to submit innovative ideas for a large research center.

Both thematic orientation and location should only be determined in the course of the competition.

The two centers are expected to create up to 3,000 new jobs in the Lusatian and central German districts.

“We want to establish two new large research centers with international appeal, which will further strengthen Germany as a location for science and lead Saxony's coalfields into the future,” said Federal Research Minister Anja Karliczek (CDU).
