Turkey summoned the Italian ambassador

, the European Union and the German

chargé

d'affaires, following what has been termed an "unauthorized inspection, in violation of international maritime law", after the frigate "Hamburg" stopped and searched the Turkish cargo ship "Rosseline" off the Peloponnese bound for the Libyan port of Misurata.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erogan spoke of a "party operation".

The check, which took place as part of the Irini mission, is illegal for Ankara since it was carried out "without the consent of Turkey or the captain".

In particular, according to the Turkish ministry, the captain and crew were searched by force and detained in a part of the ship while the German team searched the boat "by force" and without the consent of either the captain or the government of Ankara.

According to reports from the spokesman for the German Defense Ministry, Christian Thiels, the

order to board the Turkish freighter came from the mission's operational headquarters in Rome

.

And Berlin specified in a note: "Everything happened according to the procedures, the German ship tried to obtain the consent of the captain. Consent denied, but the search was then started anyway, revealing however a load of humanitarian and construction material , not weapons, as initially thought.
