In the clip above, you can see how high the water is expected to reach in Uddevalla in 2100, and see how the Henån can be flooded the same year.

All municipalities along the coast in Västra Götaland have in various ways begun to plan for climate change and the rising sea levels that are expected (see fact box).

It is also about protecting communities and infrastructure from increased rainfall and storms.

In Uddevalla, a two-year investigation has resulted in a feasibility study with proposals for landslide protection and high water protection - which can also release the rainwater.

- The sea level is rising and rising so the high tide is expected to come further towards the city and create more and more problems, says Christine Gunnarsson, project manager at Uddevalla municipality.

- We will have a steel bridge around the museum park, which we will dress in some way to create a pleasant environment.

However, it will take several more years before the protections are in place.

Should protect against two and a half meters of elevation gain

The community Henån on Orust is also at a low level in relation to the sea and is therefore particularly vulnerable.

The center is often flooded, so here the municipality will also build a sheet pile, ie a barrier to the sea and along the river.

It should protect against a sea level rise of two and a half meters at high tide.

This is the level that will probably be needed in 2100, according to SMHI's preliminary calculations.

- In order for us to be able to develop a harbor square and have an attractive center, we must set a barrier.

We are working on a program for Henån that will be up for adoption by the City Council after the turn of the year, says planning manager Rickard Karlsson.

But he reckons that the protection can only start to be built in 2027.
