A great difficulty is found among the usual thin mouth guards that you increasingly see people walking around with.

- What I see people use very much is the type that is not CE marked.

This means that you do not really know at all how the function of these is.

Some are very ill and bad, so it may not be so good protection for others, says Åsa Melhus, professor of clinical bacteriology at Uppsala University.

"Not afraid at all"

It is in SVT's special broadcast about corona that Åsa Melhus talks about mouth guards.

In the same broadcast, state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell is asked by a viewer why he is so "afraid" to recommend mouth protection.

- I am not at all afraid to recommend mouth protection in situations where mouth protection could make a difference, says Anders Tegnell.

State epidemiologist Anders Tegnell answered viewer questions in SVT's special broadcast about corona.

Among other things, he said that the Swedish Public Health Agency is constantly conducting a dialogue with, above all, the regions, which would be the ones handling such type of recommendations in that case.

- So far, the assessment is that we succeed well in keeping our distance, anyway.

It is sometimes recommended to the regions, in very special situations, that it can be good with mouth protection as a complement.

But having it in general is doubtful how much it helps, there is not great research.

We can see many countries in Europe that have had laws on oral protection for a long time, which still have an extensive spread of infection, Tegnell answers.
