The symbol is strong in Spain, as the country has more than 1.5 million cases and more than 43,000 deaths.

King Felipe VI has placed himself in quarantine after being in contact with a person who tested positive for Covid-19, the Palais-Royal announced on Monday.

"A person with whom he was in contact yesterday tested positive for Covid-19 today," said the Palace.

"In accordance with health rules, from now on he will observe a ten-day preventive quarantine", added the Palace, specifying that all official activities of the sovereign would be suspended during this period.

The queen not concerned

Queen Letizia and the children of the royal couple, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia, "will be able to continue their activities normally," the Palace said on the other hand.

Heir to the throne, Princess Leonor, for her part, had to observe a 14-day quarantine in mid-September after the detection of a case of Covid-19 among her classmates, before being tested negative.
