Neuss (dpa / lnw) - In the basement of an apartment building in Neuss, the police have dug a professional cannabis plantation with 460 plants.

Officials had "literally met with their noses", the police said on Tuesday.

Residents saw steam rising from a ventilation shaft on Monday evening and initially thought it was a fire.

A spokeswoman said the fire brigade, which was initially called, found the professionally ventilated and lighted plantation in a 130 centimeter high "crawl space".

The police then seized plants and equipment.

The value of the plants is in the five-digit range.

It will be determined against a suspect.
