Magdeburg (dpa / sa) - The construction of a new synagogue in Magdeburg is getting closer.

The cabinet approved the tendering concept presented on Tuesday, the state will contribute 2.8 million euros to the new building, announced the state chancellery in Magdeburg.

The state capital Magdeburg had already provided a plot of land in the city center.

"We are grateful that a joint effort by the cabinet succeeded in clearing the last hurdles for the new building," declared Education Minister Marco Tullner and Finance Minister Michael Richter (both CDU).

The synagogue in Magdeburg was devastated on November 9, 1938, finally blown up and demolished a year later.

A development association has been committed to the new building as a religious center for Jews in the city for many years.

He also collects donations, the goal is a sum of at least 400,000 euros.

A new synagogue is also being built in Dessau-Roßlau.
