Wiesbaden (dpa / lhe) - In view of the nationwide closed swimming pools, the German Life Rescue Society (DLRG) has warned of an increasing proportion of non-swimmers among children.

"We fear that large parts of a year will not be able to receive swimming lessons, which will further worsen the population's ability to swim, which is already declining," said the President of the Hessian state association, Michael Hohmann, in Wiesbaden on Tuesday.

In a petition, the DLRG regional council called for children's swimming courses to be offered despite the corona pandemic, “in order to counteract this possibly emerging trend at an early stage”.

Otherwise, the number of drowning people in Hessen could increase in the long term.

The regional association, which has more than 60,000 members, operates almost 100 water rescue stations across Hesse and, according to its own information, is the largest provider of swimming courses for children, young people and adults.
