Berlin (dpa / bb) - In the trial of the alleged murder on behalf of Russia in Berlin-Moabit, witnesses are to testify today who brought the police on the trail of the suspect.

On August 23, 2019, the two young people observed a man throwing a bicycle, a wig and other objects into the Spree.

They alerted the police, who arrested the man.

Since then he has been in custody.

The police later retrieved the items from the river, including the pistol with which the crime was committed.

The accused is a Russian who had his lawyer explain that his name is Vadim S., 50 years old and a civil engineer.

According to the federal prosecutor's office, he is 55 years old and has a different name.

He is said to have shot his victim, a 40-year-old Chechen, in the back and head in the Kleiner Tiergarten park.

The victim had fought against Russia in the Chechnya war and was accused of being an enemy of the state there.

According to the Federal Prosecutor's Office, it was a murder on behalf of Russian government agencies.

The case had put a heavy strain on German-Russian relations and caused an international stir.

After the crime, which witnesses described as a kind of execution, the shooter got on his bike and drove off towards the Spree.

According to witness statements, he wore a wig with black hair and was made up with dark make-up.

At the Spree he pulled off his wig and wanted to flee on an electric scooter, but was prevented from doing so.
