November 23, 2020Shock images posted on social networks showing thousands of Orthodox Jews crowded and masked in a Brooklyn synagogue for a maxi-wedding sparked the ire of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.

"It's a blatant violation of the law, it's illegal, and it's disrespectful to the people of New York," he said, noting that the "city should conduct a thorough investigation."

Videos obtained and released by the

New York Post

show the wedding held on November 8 at the Satmar synagogue in Williamsburg, which has a maximum capacity of 7,000 people and was filled to the brim with Hasidic Jews.

While the Big Apple grapples with an increase in coronavirus infections and has begun to impose new restrictions, the organizers have prepared in great secrecy and in violation of all regulations the wedding of Yoel Teitelbaum, nephew of the Rabbi of Satmar, Aaron Teitelman .

The daily Der Blatt, a publication of the sect, confirmed the event, explaining that "due to government restrictions, preparations were carried out in a secret and discreet way, so as not to attract the attention of outsiders".

"The invitations were made through word of mouth - we still read - without any written communications, or posters on the synagogue walls".

The idea of preparing everything in secret came after state authorities ordered the cancellation of another ceremony of a nephew of another Satmar rabbi, where 10,000 people were expected.

"If it turns out that since we stopped that marriage, the reaction was 'well, we're going to have a secret wedding', it would be shocking and totally deceptive compared to the conversations I've had with community members," Cuomo added. "If 7,000 people have participated in a wedding, will suffer all the consequences of the legal action ".
