Meckenheim (dpa) - The 44-year-old who died after an exchange of fire with police officers in Meckenheim was, according to the investigators, a marksman.

The Bonn public prosecutor said he had a gun ownership card on Monday.

During a search, knives, machetes, an ax, a large amount of ammunition and several long and short weapons were found.

However, only a part of the weapons arsenal was also recorded on the weapons possession card.

In the act himself he had two handguns and ammunition with him.

The 44-year-old had moved through the city of Meckenheim near Bonn on Sunday evening and shot around on the street.

A police officer was seriously injured.

After an attack by special forces, the suspect died on site.

The police had sent a large contingent onto the streets for hours.

According to the investigators, the cause of death was a shot in the head.

The investigators assumed that he had inflicted this on himself in the course of the event and thus killed himself.

The body had two more gunshot wounds.

Both were not classified as the cause of death.

The man's motive was to be looked for in private according to the current state of affairs, said the prosecutor.

"So far there have been no indications of, for example, a politically motivated, religious or other background."
