Hamburg (dpa / lno) - The first redesign phase of the Hamburg Jungfernstieg has been completed.

"We see that motor vehicle traffic has been reduced by around 75 percent and thus the conflicts with pedestrians have become less," said Transport Senator Anjes Tjarks (Greens) on Monday.

The Jungfernstieg has been largely car-free since mid-October.

Only taxis and buses as well as delivery and garbage trucks between 9 p.m. and 11 a.m. are still allowed to use the road on the Inner Alster.

The final renovation is planned for spring 2022.

According to the police, more than 1,300 administrative offense proceedings have been initiated since the entry ban on Jungfernstieg came into force.

As a result, only a few drivers knew about the ban, especially at the beginning.

That has now changed, said a spokesman.

With the redesign, an improvement for cyclists has been achieved, said Volker Tschirch from the Association of Medium-sized and Large Retailers North (VMG).

“Otherwise we are currently only seeing losers”.

Dealers therefore complain about a lack of customers.

Customers would also have problems finding their way around the new traffic routing.
