Wiesbaden (dpa / lhe) - The large-scale vaccination campaign against the coronavirus in Hesse will take about eight to nine months, according to estimates by the state government.

"We assume that between 60 and 70 percent of the population want to be vaccinated," said Prime Minister Volker Bouffier (CDU) on Monday in Wiesbaden.

This number is also necessary to achieve what is known as herd immunity.

Bouffier said that 4 million people are currently expected to be vaccinated in Hessen.

Since two vaccinations are required per person, there are a total of eight million vaccinations.

The state government is planning to have around 30 centers in which 1000 vaccinations can be carried out per day.

With 30,000 vaccinations a day, a total of eight to nine months is assumed

The vaccinations against the coronavirus are free and voluntary.

Both Bouffier and Social Affairs Minister Kai Klose (Greens) appealed to the Hessian citizens to take part in the large-scale campaign in order to effectively curb the risk of infection.
