  • This year, in Montpellier, the famous globe is replaced by a beating heart.

  • The structure will not be alone: a tree will be installed on Tuesday at the Comédie.

  • On the other hand, epidemic obliges, there will be no Hivernales, nor Ferris wheel.

We have been wondering for weeks in Montpellier (Hérault) about the successor of the famous globe, star of Christmas lights since 2014, that the new municipal team has decided to put in the closet.

Since Friday, the inhabitants have the answer: it is a giant heart, in tribute to the nursing staff and to “solidarity”, a pivotal value in these times of epidemic, decrypts the mayor, Michaël Delafosse (PS).

Created in France, the 8 m high structure lights up each evening in blue, white and red, and you can hear its beats for ten minutes at 8 p.m.

“Ecoresponsible”, assures the municipality, this XXL heart is designed in “recycled and recyclable” aluminum and in “bioprint”, a material made from sugar cane.

And to complete the green arsenal, the structure is equipped with low consumption LEDs.

A 12 m tree

But this Christmas will not be like the others.

Epidemic requires, the town has not obtained the agreement of the State services to install the Ferris wheel, and the Hivernales, with its chalets, its skating rink and its mulled wine stands, have been canceled.

The giant heart is, however, not alone.

A 12 m high Christmas tree will be installed on Tuesday, and decorated, between the Three Graces and the opera house.

And if in Bordeaux, his green counterpart did not want it, the mayor of Montpellier wanted a real tree to be presented.

“I am an environmentalist, I deeply believe in taking action for the future of the planet,” notes Michaël Delafosse.

But I also believe that the tree is one of the great traditions.

In these difficult times, it is important that everyone can have moments of magic.

The elected official notes that the tree respects "an eco-certification process".

In addition, streets, squares and neighborhoods, in particular La Paillade, Plan Cabanes, Beaux-Arts and Boutonnet will also have the right to be highlighted.

All in leds.
