Berlin (dpa) - Ex-national player Per Mertesacker sees no problems in a return action of the retired football world champions by the heavily criticized national coach Joachim Löw.

"I think everyone could cope with that," said the 36-year-old in the ZDF's “Current Sports Studio” on Saturday evening.

It is important for Löw that he now ask himself the question “which he also asked himself before this upheaval,” said Mertesacker.

"He wanted to send a courageous sign for players whom he wanted to see development," emphasized the former Bundesliga professional and 2014 world champion under Löw.

Mertesacker named Niklas Süle, Antonio Rüdiger, Julian Draxler and Julian Brandt, among others.

«If he has not seen this development in these players, he has to come back to the question.

If the answer is no, the players have not been able to take over the leadership role, then he has to question his decision and probably take it back, ”said Mertesacker.

It is primarily about the ex-world champions Thomas Müller, Jérôme Boateng (both FC Bayern) and Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund), who were retired by Löw.

Mertesacker would however welcome it if Löw stayed in office.

The 60-year-old still has the fighter in him.

"Jogi Löw doesn't need any excuses," emphasized Mertesacker.

He will draw his conclusions, hopefully the right ones when it comes to personnel, said the former international.

After the historic debacle last Tuesday in Seville against Spain, Löw also got support from Eintracht Frankfurt's sports director Fredi Bobic.

The 0: 6 is unacceptable for Germany as it was the 1: 7 of the Brazilians at the 2014 World Cup against the DFB team.

"Nevertheless you should stick to your path and you should consciously continue on this path and not panic right now," said the 49-year-old also on ZDF.

"The boys will show a reaction again, I'm sure of that and those who played will draw their experiences from it."
