November 19, 2020 "The Commission's proposal for a Pact on Migration and Asylum is based on an equitable sharing of responsibility and solidarity. Thus Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, during the high-level conference on migration and asylum

in Europe.

"The new system is based on cooperation and flexible forms of support because in this way we give choice to the member states," said Von der Leyen.

"Our proposal came after intense discussions both with the European Parliament and with all national parliaments, but we must realize that there is no one solution that satisfies everyone".

The key, according to the President of the Commission, always remains that of "finding compromises between us".

Von der Leyen concluded: "We have to recognize and acknowledge the differences, but without them blocking us."

And he adds: "A solution for migration that satisfies everyone does not exist. We must agree, meet one another, discuss compromises: national parliaments, the European Parliament and national governments".

Sassoli: "The EU is a world leader in asylum policies"

"The European Union must be a world leader in asylum and immigration policies": so David Sassoli, president of the European Parliament, in his opening speech at the high-level conference on the subject of migration and asylum in Europe.

"We find ourselves discussing these issues a few days after yet another tragedy at sea, in which even a six-month-old child lost his life," said Sassoli.

"I want to remember that behind the numbers of flows there are people, there are their stories. From here we must start to develop an effective policy on these issues".

Sassoli added: "Europe is a model of democracy, rights and security. To be a credible and authoritative global player we will have to show unity in facing the structural challenge of immigration".

In the EU it is necessary to create "a system of shared rules for rescuing people at sea and disembarking people, without criminalizing those who save lives at sea", like NGOs, "because it fulfills not only an obligation enshrined in the international law of the sea, but to a moral obligation ".
