China News Service, November 18, according to Singapore’s "Lianhe Zaobao" report, on the 16th local time in Paris, the UNESCO (UNESCO) Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage (IGC) appointed 12 experts to submit the report. It is recommended that Singapore Hawker Culture be included in the “Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage”.

According to reports, a total of 42 projects have been listed in the “Intangible Cultural Heritage Representative List” in 2020, and 25 of them have been recommended by the assessment team, including Singapore’s hawker culture.

The IGC will announce the final decision when it holds its 15th meeting online from December 14th to 19th.

According to the report, the chances of successful application for the project usually recommended by the evaluation team are quite high.

The assessment team pointed out in the report that the hawker culture is part of the life of Singaporeans. In the process of urbanization in Singapore, it has provided Singaporeans with a sense of identity and continuity for generations.

Singapore submitted its nomination documents at the end of March 2019, including photos introducing hawker culture and a 10-minute short video.

Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong posted on social media on the 17th that although the new crown epidemic has had a serious impact on hawkers, many diners strongly support their favorite hawker stalls and support hawkers to tide over the difficulties.

Hope this announcement can inspire hawkers and their supporters.

Zhang Huini, director of the National Heritage Administration of Singapore, also expressed the hope that the hawker culture can be successfully applied for heritage, and further enhance the awareness of Singaporeans on the protection of intangible cultural heritage.
