Hear Bishop Susanne Rappman about why the church wants to see an exception for funerals in the clip above.

Church funerals are counted as public gatherings and will therefore be covered by the government's new ceiling of 8 people.

The Church of Sweden now wants to see an exception.

- We see major concerns with a limit of eight.

Yesterday, we agreed to work to get the limit to 20 plus participants, says Susanne Rappman, bishop of the diocese of Gothenburg.

Postponed funerals

The Church of Sweden fears that many of the almost 7,000 funerals that are booked until Christmas will be postponed if the ceiling of eight people is introduced.

In Västra Götaland, there are around 1,500 funerals planned during the same period.

Including the people who lead and carry out the ceremony, not many relatives can participate.

- It will be ethically very difficult for those who are to decide who will be allowed to come, says Susanne Rappman.
