The authorities want to act quickly because sheep have already been attacked.

An operation to capture three wolves escaped from a refuge is underway in an area of Deux-Sèvres near Charente-Maritime, these two prefectures said on Monday.

The three canines escaped Friday from the "Sanctuary of Wolves", a refuge located in the commune of Frontenay-Rohan-Rohan, in the west of Deux-Sèvres.

"Measures to prohibit access to the area were taken so as not to interfere" with the operation in progress and "in order to tranquilize the animals", explained the prefectures, specifying that "signs noted indicated the presence of wolves near ”the refuge.

In particular, “trap cages” have been installed.

A protected species

On Monday, a report of damage to several sheep was made in Saint-Saturnin-des-Bois, a town of Charente-Maritime located about twenty kilometers from the refuge, also indicated the two prefectures.

The first surveys carried out by the French Biodiversity Office (OFB) confirm "predation by a large canine", according to the same sources, who did not specify the number of sheep attacked but according to which "testimonies on place as well as photographs confirm the presence of a wolf on the scene ”of the attack.

The two prefectures recall that “the wolf is a protected species, whether it is a wild specimen or an animal of captive origin”.

The objective is therefore not to give in to vengeance against these animals.
