For almost two weeks, violent fighting has been going on between Ethiopian government troops and regional forces in the Tigray area.

Both sides blame a violent development on each other.

Hundreds have been killed and there are reports of war crimes and massacres, according to the UN.

This weekend, Debretsion Gebremichael, leader of the People's Liberation Army in Tigray (TPLF), claimed that regional forces had fired rockets at Eritrea's capital Asmara.

This is because the TPLF claims that Eritrean forces intervened in the conflict, something that is denied by both Ethiopia and Eritrea.

Eritrea has not confirmed the alleged attack on the capital, but according to information, at least one rocket has hit near the country's information ministry, writes AP.

"Can fight on"

On Monday, information came that government forces had advanced and taken the town of Alamata, writes TT.

According to Redie Bereketeab, senior researcher focusing on the Horn of Africa at the Nordic Africa Institute, the conflict may continue for some time to come.

- As long as the TPLF has not capitulated, the war will continue.

As it looks right now, the federal army has conquered several towns and villages and the only one left is Tigray's capital, says Redie Bereketeab.

- They claim that they will take it within a few days.

It will then be the end of the TPLF as the ruling power in Tigray.

But it is not certain that the war will end there, they can continue to fight as a guerrilla movement.

Thousands on the run

More than 20,000 people are said to have fled across the border into Sudan from Tigray, many of them children, according to the UN and Sudanese media.

Last week, the UNHCR reported both food shortages and limited opportunities for healthcare in the border area.

Uganda's president is said to have met with Ethiopia's prime minister and called for talks between the fighters, Reuters reports.

According to him, the conflict damages the reputation of the entire African continent.

According to unconfirmed information, Uganda can take on the role of mediator between the parties.
