On the streets of Minsk, people on Sunday went out in protest against the country's incumbent dictator Alexander Lukashenko and demand his resignation.

Witnesses say police used rubber bullets against protesters.

The police also used tear gas against demonstrators in place to resolve the protest, writes the news agency Reuters, referring to the Russian news agency Interfax.

According to the Interfax news agency, at least 700 protesters have been arrested in Minsk and other cities.

The EU is marking

The protests are expected to flare up even more after 31-year-old Roman Bondarenko, who supported the protests, was beaten to death this week.

He was attacked by masked men, dragged to a van and driven away.

A few hours later, he was dumped outside a hospital in Minsk and had such severe brain damage that he died.

The EU has called Bondarenko's death "a scandalous and shameful consequence of the actions of the Belarusian authorities".

The country's Interior Ministry in Minsk denies involvement in the Bondarenko case, saying the 31-year-old was injured in a street fight.

Opposition politicians support

The incident comes as the regime becomes increasingly brutal in its attempts to quell the protests in Belarus.

Belarusian opposition politician Svetlana Tichanovskaya, who fled to Lithuania after the election, expressed support for protesters on social media ahead of Sunday's protests.

People have regularly taken to the streets since the elections held in Belarus in August.

There, Lukashenko received over 80 percent of the vote - a result that is heavily criticized and considered by many to have been manipulated.
