The Social Democrats in Denmark have agreed with the coalition parties Enhedslisten, SF, De Radikale and Alternativet to have all 14 million minks killed in the country killed, Danish media report.

- I am very pleased that with this agreement can hopefully create peace and quiet around the large-scale operation with the killings that are taking place on the country's mink farms.

It has been a messy process, I am the first to admit it, says Mogen Jensen (S), Minister of Food, to Danmarks Radio.

The agreement also means that the breeders will receive DKK 30 per mink that is killed before 19 November.

People infected with the mutated virus

The proposal will now be voted through in the Folketing.

It was earlier this autumn that several mutated variants of the coronavirus were discovered on Danish mink farms.

The mutations had then spread to humans and the government has therefore introduced strict restrictions in several parts of the country.

On November 4, Prime Minister Mette Fredriksen (S) announced that all minks would be killed.

But the decision was contrary to Danish law and therefore there were several rounds of how to proceed before reaching today's agreement.
