Asked about the issue of freedom of expression and the words of Emmanuel Macron, the former minister Ségolène Royal estimated, on CNews this Monday morning, that "some caricatures of Mohammed are insulting".

In his tribute speech to the professor of History assassinated in Conflans at the end of October, the Head of State reaffirmed that France would not renounce religious caricatures.

“We have a French motto: liberty, equality, fraternity.

So freedom yes, but freedom is not the right to do anything (…) There are rights and duties.

And the duties installed by the Republic are fraternity which rebalances freedom, ”said Ségolène Royal.

"I understand that some feel insulted"

"What is fraternity?"

It is the prohibition to shock, to humiliate, to insult.

It is the consideration of the suffering of others in order to be able to rectify a certain number of things.

And freedom is not the right to say anything, any way, ”continued the former presidential candidate.

"I am not for the ban on cartoons, but I am not for condoning and saying that cartoons are good," she added.

“I think some Muhammad cartoons are insulting.

All the pornographic caricatures, I understand that some feel insulted by it, including Muslims who are neither fundamentalists nor radical ”.
