November 28, 2016 Mokhtar Belmokhtar, the sought-after Algerian jihadist and leader of "al Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb" was targeted by a French air strike in southern Libya, and is "probably dead".

A US official quoted by The Wall Street Journal newspaper said today.

The airstrike took place in November, with US intelligence support, the US official said.

Mokhtar Belmokhtar had already been reported dead several times, in particular in June 2015 during a US raid in Libya, and also in 2013. Head of the group called "al-Mourabitoun", Belmokhtar has carried out numerous bloody attacks in the Sahel region and is one of the most sought after Islamic extremist leaders in the region.

The Algerian argues the need for a large coalition of jihadists in Niger, Chad and Libya.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the raid indicates the extent of military and intelligence cooperation between the United States and France.
