Both parties to the conflict in Libya agree to hold presidential and parliamentary elections at the end of next year

Xinhua News Agency, Tunisia, November 14 (Reporter Pan Xiaojing) UN officials announced on the 13th that the two sides of the conflict in Libya agreed in the Libyan political dialogue held in Tunis that day that the Libyan presidential and parliamentary elections will be held on December 24, 2021.

Stephanie Williams, acting special representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Libya and head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, made the above remarks at a press conference that day.

Williams said that the holding of elections requires the reorganization of the Presidential Council and a united and effective national unity government.

With the support of the United Nations, a new round of political dialogue in Libya was held in Tunis, the capital of Tunisia, on November 9.

The dialogue lasted for 6 days. The overall goal was to reach a consensus on a unified governance framework in Libya to "restore Libya's sovereignty and institutional democratic legitimacy."

Williams said on the 11th that representatives of all parties at the meeting reached a preliminary agreement on the "road map to elections", including national reconciliation, reorganization of troops, and placement of displaced persons. The two major issues that need to be resolved urgently after the new government comes to power are improving public Serve and punish corruption.

Since the overthrow of the Gaddafi regime in 2011, Libya has fallen into turmoil.

The national unity government recognized by the United Nations and the armed forces that support it control parts of the western region, while the National Congress is allied with the "National Army", and the conflicting parties have formed a separatist confrontation in Libya.

On October 23 this year, the two parties to the conflict in Libya signed a ceasefire agreement in Geneva and decided to implement a "complete and permanent" ceasefire throughout Libya.
