The separatists of the Polisario Front had been
warning for several days.
They threatened to respond to a possible intrusion of troops or civilians by Morocco in the buffer zone of Guerguerat.
This Friday morning, the head of Sahrawi diplomacy, Mohamed Salem Ould Salek, evokes an aggression and a situation of self-defense.
He says "
the war has started
".
He accuses Morocco of having "
liquidated the cease-fire
" signed almost three decades ago, in 1991, after a 16-year war.
For its part, the Kingdom claims to respond to the situation in Guerguerat.
Its objective is to unblock this road which leads to Mauritania and which is also a crossing point to West Africa.
The Moroccan General Staff says it has set up a security cordon across the buffer zone.
The Moroccan Foreign Ministry accuses the Polisario Front and its men of carrying out acts of banditry and considers responding to provocations.
For the head of Moroccan diplomacy, Nasser Bourita, Morocco is therefore not leading offensive action, but “
firm action
” with this military operation.
