  • A small town in Corrèze buys the Christmas tree that was intended for the city of Bordeaux before the announcement of the new environmentalist mayor not to install a "dead tree" on the square.

  • The mayor of the city of Malemort highlights support for the local forestry sector since the 19-meter-high tree was planted in Corrèze.

In Malemort, municipality of Corrèze with 8,000 inhabitants, the Christmas tree will be very impressive this year, with its 19 meters high.

And for good reason, it was initially intended for Place Pey-Berland in the city of Bordeaux, but the new environmentalist mayor does not want a “dead tree” for the end-of-year celebrations.

“The Bordeaux fir… in Malemort!

»Declared Laurent Darthou, UDI mayor of this city near Brive, in a press release.

“Since Bordeaux refuses its tree, then it will stay in Corrèze!

», He adds, saying« proud », and putting forward the defense of the forestry sector of Corrèze.

"A forest managed by professionals"

Pierre Hurmic, the newly elected EELV mayor of Bordeaux, announced in September that he would no longer install the Place Pey-Berland, a stone's throw from the town hall and the cathedral, the traditional illuminated municipal Christmas tree, qualifying it in particular as "expensive" .

This had started a controversy on social media, noisily maintained by the right-wing municipal opposition and LREM.

Laurent Darthou explained Friday that he had "not appreciated" the decision of Pierre Hurmic, because "beyond the important Christmas tradition to defend in this period of health crisis, it is a whole sector in our territory who is concerned.

These Haute-Corrèze fir trees are planted to be cut one day […] it is a forest managed by professionals ”.

Debited for benches, after the holidays

The 19m-high tree that Bordeaux had ordered will therefore be cut on Monday, and installed in Malemort, the municipality reallocating there funds that were initially dedicated to the end-of-year show in schools, canceled due to the Covid.

Total cost: 6,000 euros.

Laurent Darthou defended himself on Friday from a "political coup" to make people talk about him or his municipality, insisting that "wood is an important sector in Corrèze", especially for construction.

After the holidays, the tree will also be debited "to install benches in the town".

Philippe Maus, manager of "Mon sapin", whose 300-hectare plantation provides more than 10,000 large firs to town halls each year, confirmed to AFP that it is indeed the tree dedicated to Bordeaux that will go to Malemort.

He recalled that at the time of the controversy he had gone to Bordeaux to defend their work, and their plantation "100% green, neither fertilizer, nor pesticides".

The town hall of Bordeaux, which had promised "alternatives" to preserve "the magic" of Christmas, must soon detail its animations, which should include a visual spectacle projected on the facades, in addition to the illuminations maintained in the districts.
