The County Administrative Board has warned that it will become more common with torrential rains, storms and floods in the future and Umeå Municipality's street and park administration has been busy revealing after the destruction in recent weeks.

At Rödäng in Umeå, the Tvärån has flooded several times during the autumn, something that has created major problems and damage in the area.

Long-term efforts are required

To facilitate the water flow temporarily at Tvärån, the municipality's street and park administration will, among other things, remove a bridge and clear up trees and vegetation in and around the river, but other solutions are required in the long term.

- We are appointing a project group that will look at a more long-term solution, for example if you can do some form of delay magazine or something similar, but the work we are doing now, the "quick fix", is to get the water moving faster through Rödäng down towards the river, says park operations manager Michael Holmström.

Different causes of water levels

Michael Holmström believes that there may be several reasons for the increased water volumes.

- Partly it is the densifications on Västerslätt, there is more asphalting and there will be more water going down to Tvärån, but also the torrential rain we have received.

He says that even though it is known from earlier that Tvärån usually gets a lot of water, this year's water volumes are unusual.

- It has never been as extreme as it is this year.
