The Basque priests have risen up against the Bishop of Bilbao Mario Iceta
after his decision to
punish the former priest of Lemona Mikel Azpeitia
for statements in which he justified
ETA terrorism
in a documentary by
Iñaki Arteta
.
The
Forum of Priests of Bizkaia
has joined the previous criticisms of
three groups of 'abertzales
'
priests
and regrets the "excess" of the
future Bishop of Burgos
for having removed Azpeitia from his functions.
The internal controversy in the Church of Bizkaia takes place on the eve of Iceta's goodbye, who will say goodbye to his Diocese on November 28.
The Forum of Priests of Bizkaia constitutes the largest
group of priests among the 333 clergy
that currently exist in this Diocese and, in their statement, they reject that Azpeitia has defended ETA terrorism during its ecclesiastical career.
"He has never had any problem in
condemning
-tuning with the magisterium of the Church in the Basque Country-
violence and terror
as ways of solving a problem that, in addition to moral, is one of political coexistence," they point out in their note. This is in addition to the one issued on Monday the 9th by the
Popular Christian Communities, the Coordinator of Priests of Euskal Herria and Herria 2000 Eliza
.
These three groups claim the
right of self
-
determination
of the Basque Country of Spain, the amnesty for ETA prisoners and a Basque Church of their own and, after Azpeitia's controversial statements, they not only criticized the "unjust punishment" received but each and every one of his
statements about the so-called "Basque conflict" and ETA
.
The Bizkaia Priests Forum, however, exonerates Azpeitia and warns that in the documentary
'Bajo el silencio'
only 7 minutes of a long recording of more than two hours are collected.
The priests ask Bishop Mario Iceta if he was able to visualize the total of what Azpeitia said
before making the decision to radically distance himself from his statements and, above all, to impose on him
the abandonment of his ecclesiastical obligations as punishment
.
Biscayan priests question the decision of their bishop and lament "his misinformation, his haste, as well as the excessiveness of the decision taken and his lack of evangelical courage."
They value that Azpeitia asked for forgiveness in a letter that Bishop Iceta made public and they demand
that "it be restored as soon as possible
."
