Many have been affected by the recent floods.

Over a thousand applications had reached the county's insurance company last week, perhaps mainly from customers in Umeå and Nordmaling.

The water posed major problems in both urban and rural areas.

Umeå municipality is now working to develop a solution to prevent more floods, both in the short and long term.

But the exact plans are not nailed down.

- These extreme weather risks risking more frequent intervals in step with climate change, says Lena Karlsson Engman (S).

Accommodation critical

Several residents that SVT spoke to in the area around Tvärån, on Västerslätt and Rödäng in Umeå, have criticized the municipality for not preventing new problems after the first flood in October.

For example, the ramparts built up were removed almost immediately after the water receded.

A couple of weeks later, the area was hit hard again.

Adaptations to larger amounts of rain

- To expect that there will be time for major measures in between was enough to hope for too much, says Lena Karlsson Engman who believes that the problems the second time were exacerbated by the fact that the soil was already saturated with water.

At the same time, Umeå municipality has already begun work on adapting several areas for larger amounts of rain, for example new ponds on Mariehemsängarna.

A new strategy for stormwater management is about to be completed, but has not yet been hammered out.
