The police tell Ekot that the attack affected hundreds of computers in at least a dozen Swedish companies, including some of the largest companies in Sweden.
Police suspect that the hackers are now demanding money in the form of the crypto currency bitcoin for the attacks to stop.
According to Jan Olsson at the police's national IT crime center, the costs of this type of attack can cost anywhere from one million up to 25-30 million kronor before the companies.
