Hermès wants to speed up its production of bags and has decided to build Australia's largest crocodile farm, Australian media ABC reports.
The latter will be installed in Lambells Lagoon, near Darwin, in the northern part of the country, and will raise 50,000 crocodiles in five years, according to forecasts.
This means that the number of farmed crocodiles will increase by half in this part of Australia.
It will be located on the site of an old horticultural farm bought for 7.25 million Australian dollars (4.46 million euros).
The fashion house has teamed up with Mick Burns, considered the king of the crocodiles, with his company PRI Farming.
40 million dollars of investment
The animals will be raised for their skin but also for their meat.
The development costs of the farm amount to 40 million dollars (nearly 34 million euros).
The 376 hectares of the property are irrigated "by large reserves of water from a borehole" reports the Australian business daily

The facilities will house an "egg incubation laboratory, hatchery, growth pen, finishing pen, open operating area, and refrigerated food preparation and storage areas," ABC explains.
About thirty people will devote themselves to this breeding.
After Hermès bought his first farm ten years ago, Louis Vuitton followed suit.
The two luxury companies now own the majority of the region's crocodile farms.
Between 2018 and 2019, 24,600 crocodile skins were exported, according to the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources of the Northern, specifies the Australian media.
