On Friday last week, Växjö municipality decided to close the Cathedral School after about 40 high school students and teachers were found infected with covid-19.

For two weeks, all students will have distance learning.

- We had to do it because we are in that situation with many infected, says Pernilla Tornéus (M), chairman of the education committee in Växjö municipality.

Teachers warned of the risk

But already at the beginning of September, teachers went out and warned that the spread could pick up speed.

- Equal number of students in the same area, it is easy for there to be congestion at the restaurant and the school's other public spaces.

It will be difficult to live up to the restrictions that apply and we need measures to avoid returning to distance education, said Lars Arvidsson, teacher at Katedralskolan.

Congestion - a fact

High school principal Christian Sandahl explained to SVT Nyheter Småland that no changes were relevant and today the education committee's chairman Pernilla Tornéus admits that the congestion in the school has been a fact for a long time.

- It has been so for a long time but we have taken many measures.

There are no collections in the auditorium and very clear rules have been given for meal times in the dining room, but not everyone has followed them, she says.

Classes will be kept separate

In the event of a possible opening of the school in two weeks, a concrete measure will be introduced.

- We will no longer be allowed to mix classes from different schools, that decision has been made, says Pernilla Tornéus (M), chair of the education committee in Växjö municipality.
