The emblematic Joy Eslava room is going to close its doors for a year to undergo an ambitious renovation project with the intention of "expanding" its uses and activities.

At present, the place, located on Arenal street and with four floors, works as a nightclub and concert hall.

"We are going to continue doing concerts and

being a disco, but we are going to do more things, something that does not exist in our country until now", they

specify from the room itself,

owned by businessman Pedro Trapote, as well as the Barceló Theater.

Among the new uses of the place would be to organize dinners with a show.

The reform, which began last October,

is being developed by a "bomb architect" after a long process to obtain municipal licenses.

Promoted as a performance hall at the end of the 19th century by the businessman Bonifacio Eslava, nephew of the musician Hilarión Eslava, the original building consisted of a small room, with the name of Salón Eslava and capacity for a thousand spectators.

It became very popular as a platform for the various facets of popular theater and premiered authors such as

Lorca or Valle Inclán.

Acquired the premises by businessman Pedro Trapote at the beginning of the 80s, the nightclub was inaugurated on February 24, 1981, the day after the coup.

It would soon become one of the reference leisure places in Madrid.

In the 1980s it was a meeting place for characters from the Movida Madrid.

Joy Eslava, which has more than 4,000 square meters, has continued to host concerts, parties and various social events, with the participation of celebrities such as

Roger Moore, Pedro Almodóvar, Stevie Wonder and Julio Iglesias.
