Römosseskolan, which is a denominational free school with a Muslim focus, received criticism in the summer of 2019 from the Swedish Schools Inspectorate for boys and girls being taught separately in sports in particular, but also in handicrafts, art and Swedish.

The school also had problems with student peace.

No division

After the latest follow-up, the Swedish Schools Inspectorate states in a decision on Tuesday that the students are no longer divided according to gender and that the supervision is therefore terminated.

The decision applies to the school's grades 3-9.

The school justified the gender-segregated physical education by saying that it was out of consideration for the students.

- Above all, connected to the girls being able to move freely, without having to wear covering clothing, such as the hijab, says Frida Eek, unit manager at the Swedish Schools Inspectorate.

TT: How can you be sure that gender-segregated teaching no longer exists?

- In this case, we have not only been satisfied with a report, but also met students from different grades and made an unannounced visit.

Neither during the interviews nor the visit have we heard or seen anything that indicates that it occurs anymore, says Frida Eek.

Prayer and library

The independent school Lilla Römosseskolan, with preschool class and grades 1 and 2, has also received criticism on several points.

Among other things, because the youngest students did not understand that it was voluntary to participate in prayers.

Students said that teachers said that "if you do not participate in prayer, you will not receive a reward from Allah".

The school inspectorate later judged that the school had solved the problem, in such a way that the teachers remind the students that prayer is voluntary.

However, the Swedish Schools Inspectorate found this spring that Lilla Römosseskolan still lacked a school library.

This has now been remedied and the authority is therefore terminating the inspection.

The school has, simply put, been approved on all counts.

The management has been tested

Römosseskolan is run by Föreningen Framstegsskolan.

Its management has been checked by the Swedish Schools Inspectorate in a so-called ownership and management review and received a green light.

The authority wrote in its decision in May that the review did not reveal anything other than that the Progress School Association meets the requirements of the statutes.

Earlier this week, the Swedish Schools Inspectorate withdrew the permit for the independent New Cast School in Gävle, on the grounds that the new principal had allowed the previous owner to continue to have influence over the business.

And the previous owner has links to Islamist extremism.

The decision was based on information from Säpo.

- The situation is completely different regarding Römosseskolan.

In the ownership and management review that was done for Römosseskolan, we have, as far as I know, not received any information from the Security Police, says Frida Eek.
