Lies, obscene pride, turmoil, catastrophic management, and ethnic polarization;

All these things made President Donald Trump, the leader of the American political circus, lose, at last.

Few presidents, in recent history, have lit the nation and exposed the cracks in our democracy, like Trump.

Trump believed that a deadly virus could be eliminated, dismissed criticism, ruled as president of his base, only, and ran for re-election without pivoting toward the center.

He barely formulated a political vision for a second term.

Nevertheless, he did campaign seriously, taking part in dozens of rallies near Air Force One in the final weeks of the campaign, and surpassing many expectations, thanks to an advanced campaign data process and an enthusiastic support base.

But in the end, Trump's presidency ended as it began: by a narrow margin in major states separating candidates in an anxious country, while Trump made unfounded allegations that he was robbed.

Trump's presidency has been marked by various scandals and controversies, as much as they were disturbing.

He refused to confront the roots of racial divides in the country, and insisted on the grievances of whites.

One of the dominant political trends of his tenure was the distancing of suburban residents, white women, college voters, and independents from the Republican Party.

The chances of him being re-elected have diminished due to the epidemic, which has exposed its weaknesses, as well as our vulnerability as Americans.

Chief among them was his reckless approach to the virus, which brought him to the hospital at the height of the campaign.

Had the president never contracted "Covid-19", he might have won the election.

Polls by Time magazine showed a significant drop when that happened, especially with illiberal men in the suburbs.

Trump, who caught the infection, sent a signal to these people, that his management style had consequences even for him personally, and is therefore unlikely to change.

Shortly before Election Day, as the United States suffered from the worst rise in cases since the start of the pandemic, Trump mocked the virus as a media conspiracy.

On October 27, he wrote on Twitter, "Fake news is completely working on (Covid), (Covid) and (Covid)."

He continued: "We are approaching the turning point."

Failed to communicate

Trump was defeated for “failing to communicate about the thing voters care most, which is the Corona virus,” says Sarah Longwell of Republicans for the Rule of Law: “Republican voters are against Trump.”

While many lost their jobs, companies closed, people refrained from hugging their elderly parents, and studying children from home, "What Trump did is pretend that the coronavirus was not the most common thing in people's lives."

It remains to be seen how persistent the changes Trump has made in our democracy, and the differences he has created will not be easy to fix.

The 2020 elections demonstrated that there is still a strong market for grievances-fueled politics;

Even if defeated, Trump won millions more votes than he did four years ago.

This was not a blatant rejection of Trump's ideas and methods portrayed by his opponents.

Ultimately, however, the majority of American voters made the choice to move forward.

One of the major mistakes was about three years ago, when Trump appointed Brad Pascal as his campaign manager.

The latter, however, ran an ad campaign on social media on Facebook that helped Trump win in 2016. But Pascal was, too, a political novice, who had never run a campaign, let alone a campaign for an incumbent president, who had a narrow path. Dangerous for re-election.

Pascal spent lavishly, wasting hundreds of millions of dollars.

"Brad Parscal has never conducted a campaign before," said veteran Republican strategist Mike Dohime. "I think suddenly appointing him in charge of a billion-dollar operation is unfair and bad."

Sexy style

Pascal says the campaign budget and spending were approved by many of the other top campaign leaders.

Trump lost the national popular vote by nearly 3 million in 2016, but has never tried to expand his support outside his hard-line base.

Instead, he tried to find new voters, mostly white men without college education, drawn to his divisive, often racist style.

He lost the popular vote by a much wider margin, now, and counting continues, after a series of unintended mistakes that undermined his popular support.

Joe Biden advanced in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, the three states that contributed to Trump's victory in the presidency, four years ago.

Amid a national uprising around systemic racism, Trump has denied the core issues.

He never tried to unify the country, or speak of its common pains.

On June 5, less than two weeks after the murder of George Floyd, and with massive protests dominated by the Black Lives Matter movement, the President held a press conference at which he presented the powerful jobs report.

"I hope George looks down, now, and says this is a great thing that's happening in our country," Trump said.

He continued: "This is a wonderful day for him .. It is a wonderful day for everyone."

Opinion polls showed that a majority of voters disagreed with Trump's handling of the protests, and this reduced his support among white voters, who raised him to victory last time.

With Election Day approaching, Trump turned to the vast federal apparatus that he controls to save him, crossing more lines of questioning in 2019. He recruited federal agencies and soldiers in his campaign, and lobbied the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. One of them is to change the recommendations of "Covid-19", in its efforts to reduce the epidemic.

Chaotic image

The president relied on the Ministry of Justice to help his allies, and to investigate his political opponents.

Beginning in July, the director of the Postal Administration, Louis DeGouie, implemented sweeping changes that slowed delivery completely as millions of voters cast their ballots in the mail.

Trump used federal forces to clear "Lafayette" Square, in Washington, DC, of demonstrators, confront protests in Portland, and spread to cities "run by Democrats", to paint a picture of the chaos.

"Trump regularly wanted to use our law enforcement powers in a way that he believed would be politically beneficial to him, and particularly harmful to states and blue cities," said former Department of Homeland Security Chief of Staff Miles Taylor.

Taylor wrote an op-ed in The New York Times, without revealing his identity, in 2018, criticizing Trump's leadership.

At his election campaign headquarters on Election Day, Trump said: "The loss is never easy," adding: "It is not easy for me, it is not."

For a man who craves praise above all, being the first president in nearly 30 years to be pushed aside, after one term, is definitely a hit.

But the country suffering from the wounds, now faces the challenge of how to recover.

Missed opportunity

The Corona epidemic provided Trump with an opportunity to do something the United States wanted, in contrast to two of his biggest policy weaknesses.

Trump's attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act, first through Congress, and currently through the courts, are unpopular.

So was his tax cut, which benefited the rich disproportionately.

But during his response to Corona, the president could focus on health care and motivation, and demonstrate an agenda that responds to working Americans.

Instead, the virus has shed light on the shortcomings of its conservative policies.

It showed little interest in passing the recovery package, over the summer and fall.

Weeks before the elections, he admitted that he does not have any alternative plan, in case the courts drop "Obama Care" for health care.

In short, his actions, during the pandemic, have not recovered the voters he had lost, during the previous three years, and may have lost more.
