After years of deforestation, Costa Rica managed to reverse the trend from 1980, and forests today occupy 52% of its territory.
The country, which is now home to 27 national parks and 6% of the world's biodiversity, has chosen
sustainable development based on ecotourism
and not on industry.
To achieve energy autonomy, in the absence of petroleum and coal, the country has been able to use its natural resources: powerful winds, abundant rains, and its 116 volcanoes which produce 14% of electricity.
In 2007, the government pledged to achieve
carbon neutrality
by 2021. In 2015, electricity for the first three months was produced without burning a single liter of fossil fuel.
Today, the country's electricity comes almost entirely from renewable energies.
The funds allocated by the United Nations should directly benefit the Costa Rican population from 2021 to 2026, in particular through the extension of the program of payments for environmental services to indigenous populations but also the strengthening of the fight against fires in rural communities. .
GCF Board # GCFB27 approved project FP144 with @UNDP, providing # REDD + results-based payments for results achieved by #CostaRica 🇨🇷 during the 2014-2015 period.
