The Sweden Democratic Member of Parliament and former group leader Mattias Karlsson was recently involved in starting the conservative think tank Oikos.

Before the election, he went out and showed his support for Republicans and President Donald Trump.

- It is only to congratulate the American left on what looks to be an election victory here.

At the same time, I think it is positive to see that the Republican Party has still done quite well and that it has managed to keep the majority in the Senate, says Mattias Karlsson.

Hoping for steps on the left

He believes that it will now be interesting to see what developments follow within the Republican Party.

He hopes that the party will stick to issues concerning patriotism, law and order and the interests of the working class.

- To be able to get more into the urban areas, I think you need to take a step to the left in welfare issues, for example when it comes to health insurance or in the issue of access to universities, to make them cheaper or free.

Mattias Karlsson points out that he believes that Republicans have a greater opportunity to unite the United States than Democrats have and raises the issue of patriotism.

- Republicans are trying to point to an identity that everyone can be a part of, an identity that Americans on the basis of history and the American Constitution.

While the Democrats have instead chosen a line similar to the left in Europe and want to protect the identities of different groups and set them against each other.

Critical of Trump's actions

Since the election, Donald Trump has carried out harsh rhetoric and, among other things, claimed election fraud.

- You will see if there is something in these lawsuits that have been submitted.

I think it is deeply irresponsible to speak in this categorical way without having any evidence before the matter has been investigated legally.

I do not think it is appropriate for a leader, says Mattias Karlsson.
