Hours after the announcement of the US election results, leaders around the world congratulate Joe Biden, turning the page Donald Trump and calling for joint action in the face of global challenges.

Others are more cautious before the recount demanded by the 45th President of the United States.

France

French President Emmanuel Macron congratulated Joe Biden and called on him to act "together" to "meet the challenges of today".

"We have a lot to do to meet the challenges of today. Let's act together!", He reacted in a tweet.

The Americans have appointed their President.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson congratulated Joe Biden "on his election" as President of the United States and Kamala Harris, elected Vice President, on his "historic success".

"I look forward to cooperating closely on our common priorities, from climate change to trade and defense," he said.

Germany

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who has maintained delicate relations with Donald Trump, insisted on the "irreplaceable" transatlantic relationship.

"Our transatlantic friendship is irreplaceable if we are to overcome the great challenges of our time," she said, quoted in a tweet from the government spokesperson. 

Venezuela

"I congratulate President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris on their victory. Venezuela (...) will always be ready for dialogue and good understanding with the people and the government of the United States," tweeted Venezuelan Socialist President Nicolas Maduro.

Caracas severed diplomatic ties with Washington in 2019 after the Trump administration recognized opponent Juan Guaido as interim president of Venezuela.

Juan Guaido also congratulated Joe Biden on his victory.

"We will work together to ensure the restoration of democracy, freedom and human rights for the people of Venezuela," he said in a statement.

Israel

Benjamin Netanyahu called outgoing President Donald Trump "Israel's best friend ever in the White House," after Washington recognized Jerusalem as the capital of the Hebrew state, supported settlement in the occupied West Bank , his blessing on the annexation of the Golan and his sponsorship of the normalization of relations between Israel and Arab countries.

Mexico

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Saturday it was too early to congratulate Joe Biden.

"We will wait until all legal issues are resolved. We do not want to be reckless," he said.

"We do not wish to act lightly and want to be respectful of the self-determination of peoples and the rights of others," added Andres Lopez Obrador, while outgoing President Donald Trump did not recognize his defeat and announced his intention to challenge the election in court.

"We have no dispute with either of the two candidates. It is a human subject, it is necessary to show decency and political prudence before taking a position on what happened", added the Mexican president.

European Union

The head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, and the President of the European Council Charles Michel congratulated Joe Biden, insisting on the will of the EU to rebuild with the United States a "solid partnership" after a conflictual relationship under the mandate of Donald Trump.

Nato

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg congratulated Joe Biden on his election, hailing "a strong supporter of the Alliance" and saying he "looks forward to working" with him, saying "a strong NATO is a good one thing for North America as for Europe ".

Japan

India

Slovenia
