Faced with the spread of the coronavirus in Portugal, the authorities have declared a state of emergency.

It will be in effect until at least November 23.

The curfew is in effect from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.

But the government is going further and imposing restrictions on weekends.

In addition to the nighttime curfew, Portugal is innovating by also imposing a daytime curfew, from 1 p.m., during the next two weekends.

The Portuguese will be able to go about their business during the mornings of Saturdays and Sundays, go shopping, walk and even go to church.

But there will no longer be any question of family lunch, digestive walk and reunion for a gourmet snack at the end of the afternoon.

Everything that makes Portuguese life the spice will become impossible with a few exceptions.

The state of emergency in force

also provides for the possibility of imposing screening tests in the workplace and even to enter and leave the territory.

A potential that will become reality if the upward curve in the spread of the coronavirus is not stopped.

The cases of Covid-19 have increased in one month from 2,000 to 6,000 per day.

Patients are flocking to hospitals which are on the verge of collapse.

The authorities are trying to avoid alarmism.

They rely once again on the goodwill of the Portuguese.

But it crumbles, with weariness and worsening economic difficulties.

Measures in effect for 15 days may be renewed.

The objective is clear: we must save Christmas.
