Gothenburg and Lindholmen are a bit of the hub of Swedish 5G development.

Here is Ericsson with its antenna research and in the EU projects that led to, among other things, the 5G system, Chalmers has participated.

Erik Ström works there, at the Department of Electrical Engineering.

He is concerned about the development of society with widespread conspiracy theories about, among other things, 5G.

 - There are a lot of misconceptions about 5G and the risks around it and it can hinder development, says Erik Ström, professor of electrical engineering at Chalmers.

"Connection between 5G and corona"

In Sweden, conspiracy theories abound on the internet about a connection between the corona pandemic and the expansion of the mobile 5G network.

In the UK, a number of mobile masts have been set on fire after the theories became more widespread.

However, this has not been the case in Sweden.

Supporters believe that 5G weakens the immune system and that the coronavirus can be spread via the 5G network.

But researchers deny that there is any connection, as does Erik Ström.

 - Two things happen at the same time.

Outbreak of corona at the same time as the rollout of 5G, then you mean that one is due to the other, but then you could say that 5G is due to corona, there is no connection whatsoever.

Where do you think these thoughts and theories come from?

 - There is a concern that this is a manipulation from foreign powers that do not want us well, but it can also be rooted in a genuine concern for technology that exists in humans.

The focus for us will be to parry this with facts instead, says Erik Ström.
