Nuclear power plant completed in Belarus President visits site Neighbors are concerned November 8 4:44

The first nuclear power plant in Belarus, the former Soviet Union, was completed, and President Lukashenko visited the site.

However, concerns are growing in neighboring Lithuania as the nuclear power plant was built in a border area away from the capital.

Completed in Ostrovets in northwestern Belarus is the first nuclear power plant developed by Russia's nuclear corporation Rosatom, which is said to meet approximately 20% of domestic electricity demand.

President Lukashenko, who visited the site on the 7th, said, "It's a historic moment. We are trying to realize a nuclear power nation in Belarus," celebrating the completion of the first nuclear power plant in the country.

However, the nuclear power plant was built in the northwestern border of Belarus, and Lithuania has opposed the construction from the beginning because it is very close to Vilnius, the capital of neighboring Lithuania, about 45 km.

In addition, 34 years ago, when the Chernobyl nuclear accident occurred in present-day Ukraine, Belarus suffered serious radiation damage due to the effects of wind direction, etc. It is expected that the criticism of neighboring countries and the people will increase against the administration.
