07 November 2020 "We wake up in a suffering country, deeply divided, in search of its soul".
Beyond litigation and controversy, the words written by
Dan Rather
, dean of American political journalists, on the morning of November 4 will be the essential starting point for a
Biden
presidency
.
Before the
new head
of
the White House
lies an America split in half.
Democrats and Republicans now seem to belong to distinct and opposing worlds.
Two Americas so different than watching
CNN
and
Fox News
, the two TV stations that refer to the two political orientations, it is difficult to believe that they speak of the same country.
“This is a battle for the soul of our nation”, repeated
Joe Biden
himself
during his electoral campaign
, not by chance
.
But sketching one where both sides can recognize each other will be a daunting task.
L '
America
is torn by tensions at several levels: ethical, value, ideological, ethnic, racial, gender, and of course the large and growing economic inequalities that seem to inevitably accompany change of the globalized and digitized;
and which feed in vast sectors of society seething reservoirs of suffering, frustration, uncertainty, anger.
It is certainly not the
United States
that has the exclusive right to these dynamics.
But if it is still true, as Alexis De Tocqueville argued, that looking at the United States is important to understand what our future will also be, then today more than ever the United States deserves attention.
Biden
uses language that focuses on
dialogue
,
inclusion
,
moderation
.
It proposes programs that aim, at least in theory, to help the middle class and the working class, to harness, to some extent, what Alexandria Ocasio Cortez calls the "brutal exploitation" imposed by today's capitalist system, the ultimate cause of many social tensions, while addressing the climate emergency.
Challenges in themselves impressive, all the more so if they are to be faced while a
pandemic
rages
.
The risk is that the United States will sink more and more into divisions and disorientation, to the benefit - moreover - of Chinese power.
A basic problem is that the two fronts no longer even agree on data, numbers, facts.
The political confrontation has overwhelmed the cornerstone of faith in science.
It is difficult to unite a country in which there is no agreement even on what is true and what is false.
At 78 years old, as many as he will be on the day of his
inauguration
,
Biden
has the feat of life ahead of him.
