Argentine football legend Diego Maradona will remain hospitalized at least until Monday to recover from his operation for a subdural hematoma suffered Tuesday in Buenos Aires, according to his doctor Leopoldo Luque.

"We are sure Diego will stay here until Monday," Dr Luque told reporters outside the Olivos hospital in the north of the Argentine capital.

The 60-year-old Argentinian football idol has had "episodes of confusion linked to a context of abstinence which requires treatment for several days", the practitioner explained the day before.

"When a patient is affected by an abstinence syndrome we treat him, we do not let him go. Diego did not necessarily agree but we insisted, now we see him getting better," added Leopoldo Luque .

"The idea now is that he stays until he completes the process, which varies according to the patient" concluded the doctor.

The 1986 world champion has repeatedly claimed that he has not used cocaine for years, but according to relatives and the press, he is now addicted to alcohol.

The 1986 world champion was hospitalized Monday in La Plata, 60 km south of Buenos Aires, due to anemia and dehydration.

Examinations had revealed the presence of a subdural hematoma, a pocket of blood formed under the skull.

He was then transferred to the private clinic Olivos, in the municipality of the same name.

Diego Maradona's life has been punctuated by many health problems, some of which are linked to excesses of all kinds which have sometimes made him flirt with death.
