Some 150 people have died or are missing in an indigenous village in northern Guatemala after a landslide caused by the devastating passage of Cyclone Eta through Central America, the government of that country reported on Friday.

A landslide

buried about 150 homes

in the Quejá village, in the northern municipality of San Cristóbal Verapaz, and it is feared that a large part of its occupants have died, according to the president, Alejandro Giammattei.

"We calculate that between the deceased and the disappeared, the unofficial figures show us

more or less 150 deaths,"

the president said at a press conference.

An Army brigade arrived this Friday in the Quejá village to search for the victims and bring aid to the survivors.

The deaths in Guatemala are added to the twenty registered in the other countries of the isthmus due to the Eta pass, which on Tuesday attacked the North Caribbean of Nicaragua as

a category 4 hurricane.

The region continued to suffer the effects of the storm on Friday, with rain and fog in some areas, while the authorities assess the devastation left by the cyclone

from Guatemala to Panama,

before heading back to the Caribbean.

The cyclone left northern Honduras on Thursday afternoon turned into a tropical depression and returned to the Caribbean, where it

could strengthen again

into a tropical storm as it moves towards Cuba, according to projections from the United States' National Hurricane Center (NHC).
