French President Emmanuel Macron announced this Thursday that the number of troops used by his country for border controls will be doubled, to 4,800 people, and that in December he will ask other EU leaders for an in-depth reform of the Treaty of Schengen on the external borders.

Macron, who traveled to the Pertús border post with Spain, said that the objective is to "fight against clandestine immigration" and prevent those flows from being used by terrorists.

In a statement to the press, he explained that with the Schengen reform he wants the European Union (EU) to equip itself with "a real police force" to control its external borders and for decision-making to be done "in a much more integrated way" .
