There is no doubt that the health crisis of Coronavirus (Covid-19) will accelerate the resurgence of protectionism, nationalism and regionalism to some extent.

In his article published in the French newspaper "Le Pignon", the writer and Lunduca Sidibe said that the global trend gives priority to meeting local demand and emphasizing the principle of "local production and consumption."

He added that the isolation of countries is exacerbating in order to contain the pandemic, which has pushed them towards closing borders, and countries are returning to adopting protectionist and nationalist policies that harm the basic principles of globalization.

When Donald Trump was elected President of the United States, his main slogan during his election campaign was "America first", and later this president's confrontations with China multiplied.

Since his inauguration, he has not hesitated to question the importance of globalization, which is supported by many great powers and acknowledges its benefits to the global economy, the report says.

During the ninth edition of the strategic dialogue for the "De-globalization" conference, the Policy Center for the New South and the HEC Center for Geopolitics sought each during the conference organized on October 27 Rabat and Paris to raise some major global issues in the context of the current economic situation of the world affected by the Coronavirus.

The author pointed out that "Covid-19" - which caused the deterioration and slowdown of the global economy and the collapse of the labor market - shed light on the interlinkages between the productive fabric based on transportation and shipping abroad.

The issue of providing masks in France and other sectors revealed that national economies have become hollow, as national regions are no longer able to produce entire products.

radical change

The writer emphasized that countries are giving priority to meeting local demand and focusing on the principle of "local production and consumption." For this reason, the world is witnessing an exacerbation of the phenomenon of isolation in order to be able to contain the pandemic, which prompted many affected countries to close borders.

The writer pointed out that the organizers of this edition of the conference recognized that "Covid-19" has taken a new dimension and radically changed the global economic system, as the disintegration of globalization was evident in the emergence of a system dominated by unilateral measures.

"This situation is not only the product of unilateral measures taken by the great powers such as China, Russia and the United States, but also the product of a broader phenomenon that is closely linked with all forms of protectionism and nationalism that countries follow to make decisions related to their domestic policies," he said.

The context shrouded in doubts

The writer explained that the multilateral relations between government agencies are preventing the provision of joint, fair and effective solutions to face the current common challenges.

In fact - the writer says - the global health crisis - which left a state of uncertainty and coincided with the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union, which had economic and political repercussions inside and outside Europe - had clear effects.

In other words, Covid-19 imposed a new economic model aimed at "de-globalizing."
